Bluewater Fish and Chips

STAYNER - At Bluewater Fish and Chips, the style is strictly down home so don't expect anything fancy, but you will get some of the best fish and chips this side of the East Coast.

Owner Harry Dykxhoorn was born on the North Sea coast of Holland where his father was a fisherman, so he knows a thing or two about fish.

"I think I have fish and fishing in my blood," said Dykxhoorn, who brings in much of halibut, haddock and white fish that he serves from Alaska.

Although it would be a lot easier to buy fish pre cut into filets, Dykxhoorn hand cuts the portions before dipping them into homemade batter.

The moist fish is served in a delicious crispy and golden batter served with homemade coleslaw and great tasting French fries.

Dykxhoorn ran a fish restaurant in Halton Hills from 1976 to 1988 when he moved his business to a leased property in Collingwood. He decided to buy an old diner in 2001on Stayner's main street when his Collingwood landlord decided not to renew the lease.

`We had to totally renovate the building, but a lot of friends and even customers came over to help," he said.

The result is cozy 40-seat dining room where service provided by Dykxhoorn's wife Ada is friendly and attentive.

Dykxhoorn, 62, works about 80 hours a week but has no plans to slow down.

"I really enjoy doing this," he said.

At around $11, the dinner portions are very generous, but snack fish and chips at $6.70 are great for smaller appetites and there are hamburger platters for landlubbers.

Bluewater Fish and Chips is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, but bring cash or a debit card as credit cards are not accepted.

Reservations are not accepted so you may have to wait for a table especially on a Friday evening, but take out is also available. Phone 1-705-428-6482
