BackstreetBy Roberta Avery - back to list MEAFORD - It's been 15 years since Terry and Ann McGrath purchased Meaford's Back Street Café and although back then they had no restaurant experience, Terry's passion for good food and Ann's love of meeting people has been a winning combination. The 45-seat restaurant tucked in behind Meaford's main street has a loyal following of regular customers who enjoy such specialties as ginger shrimp and rack of lamb roasted with rosemary and garlic. The McGraths have never regretted their decision to leave Toronto . "It was a whole new life for us. It was very exciting and quite a rush," said Terry a former food photographer. Terry, 49, took over the kitchen and Ann, 50, a former payroll accountant, the dining room. To keep up with changing food trends, Terry enrolled in a chef's course at Georgian College in Owen Sound - a course he now teaches at the college himself in the restaurant's quieter winter months. Backstreet specials typically include appetizers of coconut shrimp with a lemon dipping sauce, local smoked trout and main courses such as Mediterranean Chicken - a chicken breast stuffed with tomatoes garlic and herbs. Signatures dishes including a variety of crepes the most popular being Chicken Armandine which I enjoyed during a recent lunch. This delicate crepe was wrapped around slices of chicken breast in a creamy sauce and served with a fresh green salad topped with a Terry's special tarragon dressing- a bargain at only $7.95. For dinner try the Steak Au Poivre a 6 ounce peppered filet steak in a delicious mushroom wine sauce or the Café Chicken - a chicken breast stuffed with cheese and simmered in a tomato, mushroom and onion wine sauce. Lunch for two including half a litre of B&G Partager Blanc is $30 to $35 and a three-course dinner for two including a half litre of the red house wine Italian Dragani is $60 to $70. For dessert try the carrot cake you won't be disappointed. Service headed up by Ann is professional, yet friendly. The Backstret Café is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday and brunch Sundays. Take Highway 26 to Meaford, turn left at the third traffic light, the Backstreet Café is on the left at 27 Nelson Street West . Phone 1-519-538-4455. |
